Well I made back from Aberdeen safe and sound after a long 9.5hrs on the train.

I must say it was hard being away from my partner and Sam but I survived and as was so busy the time flu by.

I was photographing in two beautiful locations. Kings College located in old Aberdeen serving part of the university and The Highlanders Museum followed at the Norwood Hall. I must say although it wasn’t 15 degrees and beautiful sunshine it didn’t snow, and both brides were so much fun to work with.

Wendy and Greg decided to have their little 18month boy Blasé as their pageboy. I have seen quite a few weddings with very young flower girls and pageboys and it can be a recipe for disaster, but I couldn’t believe how good he was through the whole day and even managed to sit through a three course meal with 70 guests.

The highlight of the weekend weddings was the photobooth perth shoot that we provided at Wendy and Greg’s wedding. I would like to say that most of their guests had a few drinks but I think they were just a group of family and friends that were totally up for it.

Photoshop Basics – Levels

If they are towards the left hand side it shows there has been ‘shadow clipping.’ If it shows a comb like appearance i.e. if there are a lot of thin lines then it suggests the image has already been manipulated heavily. Therefore the aim is to achieve a graph which is centred but contains a full set of tonal ranges but without there being too many values at either side of the graph.

What is important to the photographer is how to use the levels control panel to lighten or darken your image and hence correct the histogram. To do this simply move the sliding bar (also known as the gamma slider, as this particular feature controls the gamma values for the inputted image). When you slide the gamma controller to the left you force the values to move the histogram to the right resulting in more lighter pixels in the image and hence a lighter image overall. This is the opposite if you move the gamma slider to the right as the image darkens. This is due to the fact that the histogram values have moved to the darker end of the spectrum.

We’ve all seen it floating around out there in cyberspace: the bad photo made worse during an attempt at fixing it in editing software. Let’s face it: some photos just can not be fixed up; no amount of editing will make a bad photo good (or in some cases, not even passable). But what about good photos? Should we touch them up a bit in Photoshop?

First, many purists stand by the notion that a photo should be perfect straight out of camera. This is a wonderful notion, but let’s consider a photography great, Ansel Adams. Yes, his photos were excellent straight out of camera. But it was his trademark dark room techniques coupled with his brilliant captures that made them the great work they are.

Now that we have entered the digital age, we have stepped away from dark rooms and the post processing that happens there. For us, that post processing takes place in photo editing software. Additionally, if we were shooting with film we could make some exposure adjustments during the processing of the film itself or during exposure of the photo paper. If a photo is very poorly exposed you cannot fix it; either the medium (the chip, in the case of digital cameras, or the film) was exposed for too long, and therefore some lighter parts of the photo were not recorded in the making of the file; or the photo was not exposed enough, creating dark spots in which no information was recorded. Attempting to fix these in an editing program cannot bring back the lost information.

Post processing of a digital photo should be fairly minimal. The goal is to enhance the features of a good photo, not repair the mistakes of a bad one. A few things should be considered before beginning post processing. First, it is essential that the photographer’s monitor is calibrated to ensure what is seen is what will print out (especially if you download printer ICCs).

Secondly, the photographer should consider what format of the photo is set to coming out of the camera. Many professionals have their camera set to record the images on their card in an unconverted (RAW) form. Most hobbyists and laymen however take their photos in JPEG form; which is already converted according to in-camera settings. If a photo is taken in RAW, some adjustments can be made using a RAW editor: Photoshop has plug-ins available for this sort of editing. If you can adjust it in RAW, that is preferable to adjusting the photo after it has been converted to the lower-quality JPEG file. This is another strike against the “purists”: all photos are “edited”, in essence. It is simply a matter of whether the photographer allows the camera to make the adjustments or do herself in a RAW editor.

Each photographer will develop their own workflow as part of their personal touch, but a few elements will be the same from photographer to photographer. Let’s look at some of the steps.

Many photographers start with a simple “defog”; a sharpening step to erase some of the blur introduced when the camera or editing program converts the file from camera RAW to JPEG. Generally this entails an unsharp mask at 14-20%, at a range of 40-50 pixels. Alternatively, some photographers use a tool in Photoshop called “High pass”; this is found under the filters, and is run on an addition level, and the level opacity is set to overlay or soft light.

Photos that have some light balance problems may have Levels run to correct this problem (if it is not corrected in a RAW editor). Those who are savvy with Photoshop will likely run this in an adjustment level and erase back parts of the photo that were correctly exposed in the original version, to give better light balance and exposure throughout the photo. Levels can be easily over done, and should be used with care.

These two steps are perhaps all the processing that the bulk of your good-quality photos will need. At this point you may choose to convert your photo into black and white or sepia tone, which will likely entail increasing the contrast to bring out your shadows, and of course desaturating the color.

Some photographers at this point may choose to go on to do color adjustments, often “popping” the colors, so that they are saturated and intense. Take care when doing color popping to consider natural skin tones, if you have humans in your photos. There is little worse than orangey glow in your portrait subject; no one wants to look jaundiced. Use adjustment layers and masks to protect the elements of your photo that are not enhanced by increased color saturation.

If a photo is resized, either for printing or for uploading it for display on the web, you may consider another sharpening step at this stage to clear some of the jaggies that crop up during resizing. A quick run through the unsharp mask at 75- 300%, and at a range of 0.3-1.5 pixels (notice that first one is less than 1 pixel) should help your photo match the sharpness quality that was present at the full-size level.

At the end of it all, this is not to say that all less-than-perfect shots are worthless. If you have a photo that is not quite perfect, but you or a client love it anyway because of a moment or expression that was captured, then by all means, keep it and cherish it. Just don’t butcher it up in editing: accept if for what it is, flaws and all. But your good photos can be made better with a little careful editing. Remember to keep it simple and subtle. It’s better to have people look at your photo and say “Wow, what a gorgeous capture” than to ask you what your editing steps were.
